Outdoor Education

It might only be a concrete floor but it's a start. Fingers crossed that all those drainage points are in the right place and there are enough of them.

The new Director of Outdoor Ed shared his concern that it is a common mistake not to put floor drainage in a drying room, when in fact all the run-off from wet clothing needs to go somewhere!

Sports Hall - Brickwork

After some time to decide on the colour of the mortar (brown or natural) we decided upon the natural look. Now the work has started on the 2.5m high perimeter brickwork. So far the standard of bricklaying is excellent, very consistent and clean.

Electrical Supply Connection

The company carrying out the cabling works on behalf of NEDL have had to delay the connection date from the 21st August 2006 to 30th August 2006.

On the positive side; the disruption to the electricity supply to the Academy will take place approximately between the hours of 8pm and 10pm at night which should make the disruption minimal.

They will still be excavating their trench from the sub-station into
the public highway and up the side of Engineering this week. Then they will be drawing the cable into the trench allowing Surgo to back-fill early next week.

New Mobiles

Over the summer break new mobiles were installed to provide decanting space for when the refurbishment work starts. Small scale refurbishment will be ongoing over the next 12 months.

Engineering Rooms (Before)

Phase 1 will involve 7 Engineering rooms to be refurbished and 1 Maths room converted in to an additional Engineering room. All rooms will be re-floored in vinyl, new fixed side benching with cupboards underneath and 4 vice technology benches will be installed. All rooms will be re-decorated and the finishing touches will include new tool cupboards, teachers desk, stools and display boards.

Sports Hall

Most of the structural steelwork is in place for the Sports Hall and now with the roof deck in place the floor slab is being prepared.

Central Pods

One of the main design features will be a central pod structure (seen here on the right) This protrudes from the main structure, forming two large classrooms at the front and is blanced with two more rooms at the rear.

Engineering refurbishment

Steelwork

Rome wasn't built in a day but the steelwork is flying up. Monday 19 June and the steelwork is still on the ground, by the end of the week the Sport Hall has taken shape.

The main contractor had planned for 2 weeks to get to this stage so had to send the steelworkers off site whilst the drainage diversion was completed.

May 8th 2006 - Surgo (Newcastle) start on site as the main contractor.

Surgo Construction is the new name for Bowey Construction, a long established Construction company based in the North east of England.

Final Meeting With Preferred Contractors

The purpose of this meeting was to iron out a few details but also to meet the team proposed by the contractors.

Creating A Firm Foundation

Three weeks in and there is still not a great deal to see but we are on course to completing the piling on time. This short video explains the process and why we selected it.

Total Number Of Piles

Today was a good day for piling with no rain.
24 piles went in today that makes 52 since 4.30 on Monday.

The total number of piles is 485 + 65 Contiguous piles.
Total 550

They will need to average 24 piles a day to complete by 28 April 2006

Contiguous Piled Wall

Piling around the tennis courts started today.

The tennis courts are set approximately 1m above ground level and after years of disturbance due to tree root growth are begining to fall away on one side.

The engineers have specified contiguous piling around the perimeter.

This is where adjacent piles are almost touching.

Climbing Wall

Following discussion it was agreed that the climbing wall would be located in the new Sports Hall.

Our structural engineers are looking at any possible implications for the steel work and will liase directly with David Exeter (Academy OE Director) and the climbing wall suppliers.

Moving the mobiles

They said it couldn't be done! - but thanks to Vanguard 2001 a block of 4 mobiles was relocated over February half term.

Vanguard split the block in to two sections and used a cradle to support the structure. A 500 tonne crane was used to lift it over the Sports Hall.

Sweeney a local ground workers prepared the foundations and drainage then after the lift and relocation they completed all access routes and re-connected the electricity supply.

All within seven days - now that's amazing!

Piling has started

Following site preparation by Hall Construction and a successful drain diversion, piling started on Monday 27th March.
Our decision to go for augered piling is already looking like a good one. Pennine who are carrying out the piling are using a motor driven auger piling system which is causing us little concern in terms of disturbance to normal Academy activities.
Aim - all piling finished before exams start in May.
