Macmillan Academy Middlesbrough

Phase 1 will involve 7 Engineering rooms to be refurbished and 1 Maths room converted in to an additional Engineering room. All rooms will be re-floored in vinyl, new fixed side benching with cupboards underneath and 4 vice technology benches will be installed. All rooms will be re-decorated and the finishing touches will include new tool cupboards, teachers desk, stools and display boards.

Most of the structural steelwork is in place for the Sports Hall and now with the roof deck in place the floor slab is being prepared.

One of the main design features will be a central pod structure (seen here on the right) This protrudes from the main structure, forming two large classrooms at the front and is blanced with two more rooms at the rear.

Originally the scope of works in Engineering was:

New vinyl floors to 4 rooms.
Consolidate all electrical circuits.

Rome wasn't built in a day but the steelwork is flying up. Monday 19 June and the steelwork is still on the ground, by the end of the week the Sport Hall has taken shape.

The main contractor had planned for 2 weeks to get to this stage so had to send the steelworkers off site whilst the drainage diversion was completed.

May 8th 2006 - Surgo (Newcastle) start on site as the main contractor.

Surgo Construction is the new name for Bowey Construction, a long established Construction company based in the North east of England.

The purpose of this meeting was to iron out a few details but also to meet the team proposed by the contractors.

In total they are offering 7 full time staff on site.

Three weeks in and there is still not a great deal to see but we are on course to completing the piling on time. This short video explains the process and why we selected it.

Today was a good day for piling with no rain.
24 piles went in today that makes 52 since 4.30 on Monday.

The total number of piles is 485 + 65 Contiguous piles.
Total 550

They will need to average 24 piles a day to complete by 28 April 2006

Piling around the tennis courts started today.

The tennis courts are set approximately 1m above ground level and after years of disturbance due to tree root growth are begining to fall away on one side.

The engineers have specified contiguous piling around the perimeter.

This is where adjacent piles are almost touching.
